How Long After Shocking a Pool Can I Swim?

Wait until free chlorine drops back under 5 ppm before swimming, and test to be sure. After a normal chlorine shock, that usually means waiting overnight. Shock in the evening with the pump running, test in the morning, and swim once the level is in range and the water is clear. After a heavy shock for algae, it can take several days. Always follow the directions on the product label.

How long should I wait?

  • Routine chlorine shock: usually overnight, until chlorine tests under 5 ppm.
  • Heavy shock for a green pool: several days, until the water is clear and chlorine is back in range.
  • Non-chlorine shock: often much sooner. Follow the label.
  • After adding acid or adjusting pH or alkalinity: about an hour with the pump running.
  • After clarifier or algaecide: follow the label.

What is the best way to shock so I can swim sooner?

  • Step 1: Shock in the evening, after the sun is off the pool.
  • Step 2: Run the pump overnight.
  • Step 3: Test free chlorine in the morning.
  • Step 4: If it is under 5 ppm and you can clearly see the main drain, the pool is ready.
  • Step 5: If it is still high, leave the pool uncovered in the sun and retest in a few hours.

Why does it matter?

Very high chlorine irritates skin and eyes, dries out hair, and bleaches swimsuits. It is hardest on children, who swallow more water. Cloudy water after a shock is a separate safety issue: if you cannot see the main drain at the deep end, a swimmer in trouble cannot be seen either. In Bakersfield's sun, chlorine drops quickly, so a pool shocked at sunset is usually ready the next day.

When should I bring in a water sample?

Bring a sample if chlorine is still very high after two or three sunny days, or if it drops to zero overnight every time you shock. High stabilizer can hold chlorine in the water longer and make it work more slowly, and chlorine that vanishes overnight points to algae. We'll test it free and tell you what is going on.

Can I swim 30 minutes after shocking?

Not after a chlorine shock. Wait until chlorine tests under 5 ppm, which usually takes overnight.

What happens if I swim too soon after shocking?

You may get red eyes, itchy skin, and bleached swimsuits. Rinse off with fresh water. If anyone has trouble breathing, get medical help.

How often should I shock my pool?

Every one to two weeks in summer, and after storms, parties, or algae. Less often in winter.

Is it better to shock at night?

Yes. Sunlight burns off chlorine, so shock added in the evening gets a full night to work.
