Why Won't My Pool Heater Turn On?

A pool heater that will not turn on usually has one of three problems: a setting, low water flow, or the gas supply. Check that the heater is switched on and set above the current water temperature, clean the filter and baskets so water flow is strong, and make sure the gas valve is open. If the display shows an error code, write it down. Anything involving gas, burners, or wiring inside the heater is a job for a technician.

What are the most common causes?

  • Settings. The heater is off, in the wrong mode, or set below the water temperature. An automation system or timer may also be holding it off.
  • Low water flow. A dirty filter, full baskets, or a closed valve trips the heater's safety switch so it will not fire.
  • Gas supply. The gas valve is closed, or the supply is off.
  • Ignition problems. A dirty or failed igniter, flame sensor, or pilot.
  • Scale inside the heater. Hard water leaves scale in the heat exchanger, which restricts flow and causes overheating shutoffs.
  • Pests and debris. Heaters that sit all summer collect spider webs, nests, and leaves around the burners.

What can I safely check myself?

  • Step 1: Make sure the pump is running and the heater has power. Check the breaker.
  • Step 2: Check the settings. Turn the heater on, choose pool or spa, and set the temperature above the current water temperature.
  • Step 3: Clean the skimmer and pump baskets and the filter. Low flow is the most common reason a heater will not fire.
  • Step 4: Make sure the valves are open and water is flowing through the heater.
  • Step 5: Check that the gas shutoff valve at the heater is open, with the handle in line with the pipe.
  • Step 6: Look at the display. Write down any error code or flashing light, and the heater model.
If you smell gas, do not try to start the heater. Leave the area and call your gas company. Do not take the heater apart or try to light it by hand.

Why do heaters act up in the fall?

In Bakersfield, most heaters sit unused from late spring until the first cool nights of fall. Months of sitting give spiders and rodents time to nest inside, and a summer of hard water and high pH leaves scale in the heat exchanger. Low pH is just as hard on a heater, because acidic water eats the copper inside. Test your water and fire up the heater a few weeks before you need it, so there is time to fix what you find.

When should I call for help?

Call us if the heater shows an error code, clicks but does not light, lights and then shuts off, leaks water, or leaves soot on top. Top Dog repairs and installs pool heaters. If you'd rather have us come to you, a service visit starts with a $139 diagnostic fee. It covers our fuel and travel time, diagnosing your pool equipment, and a written work order for your approval. The fee doesn't cover any repairs.

Why does my pool heater click but not ignite?

The igniter is trying, but there is no flame. Common causes are a closed gas valve, low gas pressure, or a dirty igniter or flame sensor. Have a technician check it.

Why does my heater start and then shut off?

Usually low water flow or overheating. Clean the filter and baskets first. If it keeps happening, scale in the heat exchanger or a failing sensor may be the cause.

How long should a pool heater last?

About 8 to 10 years, and longer with balanced water.

Can bad water chemistry damage a pool heater?

Yes. Low pH corrodes the copper inside, and high pH and hard water leave scale that blocks flow. Keeping pH at 7.2 to 7.6 protects the heater.
