How Do I Get Rid of White Calcium Scale on My Pool?
That white, crusty line on your pool tile is calcium scale. It forms when hard water, high pH, and evaporation push calcium out of the water, and Bakersfield pools get all three. You can slow it down by keeping pH at 7.4–7.6, using a scale-control product, and topping off the water often. Heavy scale on tile usually needs professional cleaning, which Top Dog offers.
Why does calcium build up on my pool?
- Hard fill water. Bakersfield tap water carries a lot of dissolved minerals.
- Evaporation. When water evaporates, the minerals stay behind. Every top-off adds more, so calcium climbs each summer.
- High pH and alkalinity. Above about 7.8, calcium comes out of the water and sticks to tile, plaster, and equipment.
- Heat. Calcium scales more easily in warm water, and it builds up fastest inside heaters and on salt cell plates.
What kind of scale do I have?
Put a few drops of white vinegar on the scale. If it fizzes, it's calcium carbonate: white, flaky, and removable. If it doesn't fizz and it's hard, gray-white, and glassy, it's likely calcium silicate. That kind is much harder to remove and usually needs a professional.
How do I prevent calcium scale?
- Step 1: Keep pH at 7.4–7.6 and alkalinity toward the low end of 80–120 ppm.
- Step 2: Keep calcium hardness around 200–400 ppm and test it monthly in summer.
- Step 3: Ask us to check your water balance. We'll look at pH, alkalinity, calcium, and temperature together to tell you whether your water is likely to leave scale.
- Step 4: Use a scale-control product such as Orenda SC-1000 if your fill water is hard. It helps keep calcium and metals from coming out of the water as scale or stains.
- Step 5: Keep the water level up. A waterline that drops and returns leaves ring after ring on the tile.
- Step 6: Clean your salt cell whenever you see white buildup on the plates, following the manufacturer's directions.
How do I remove scale I already have?
- Light scale on ceramic or porcelain tile: a pool-safe scale remover or a pumice stone made for pool tile, used wet and gently. Don't use pumice on glass tile, painted surfaces, or vinyl.
- Heavy scale or glass tile: leave it to a professional tile cleaning service so the tile isn't scratched or damaged.
- Scale in the heater or salt cell: bring the cell in and we'll test it. Heater scaling should be looked at by a technician.
When is it beyond DIY?
If the crust is thick, on glass tile, doesn't fizz with vinegar, or comes back within weeks, call us. If your calcium hardness is extremely high, often above about 800 ppm, a partial drain and refill is the only way to bring it down. We'll help you figure out how much.
How does Top Dog's tile cleaning work?
We drain the pool and bead-blast the tile with glass bead. It's a lot like sandblasting, but with fine glass bead instead of sand. Then we clean out the spent bead, refill the pool, and add startup chemicals. Tile cleaning can be done on its own or together with a chlorine wash if the plaster needs attention too. How to take a good water sample: use a clean bottle, turn it upside down and push it elbow-deep, away from the return jets and skimmer, then flip it and let it fill. Bring it in the same day.
Is calcium scale harmful to swimmers?
No, it isn’t a health risk. But it’s rough on skin and feet, it looks bad, and scale inside heaters and salt cells shortens their life.
Will vinegar remove pool scale?
Vinegar can soften very light calcium carbonate scale, but it’s slow. Mostly it’s a quick test: if the scale fizzes, it’s the easier-to-remove kind.
What calcium level should my pool have?
About 200–400 ppm for most plaster pools. Too low can etch plaster, too high leads to scale, especially with high pH and hot water.
Can I lower calcium without draining?
Not really. No chemical removes calcium from pool water. Diluting with a partial drain and refill is the practical fix. Scale-control products help keep it from depositing in the meantime.
How often should I clean my salt cell?
Check it every few months, and more often in summer or with hard water. Clean it when you see white buildup on the plates, following the manufacturer’s directions, or bring it to Top Dog and we’ll test it.
