Water Testing

Do I need to know my pool gallonage for a water test? No. The test works without it. But we need it to tell you exactly how much chemical to add, so bring it if you know it.
How can I get a rough estimate of my pool gallonage?Rectangle: length x width x average depth x 7.5. Round or oval: length x width x average depth x 5.9. Average depth = (shallow end + deep end) / 2. Not sure? Bring your measurements and we will do the math.
How much water should I bring in for a water test?About 16 ounces. A clean bottle filled to the top. We have containers if you need one.
What is the right way to collect a water sample?Rinse the bottle. Hold it upside down, push it down to your elbow, then turn it right side up to fill. Cap it underwater.
Where in the pool should I collect the sample?Away from the skimmer and return jets, about 12 to 18 inches deep, out in the middle of the pool.
Should the pump be running before I collect a sample?Yes. Run it a few hours first so the water is mixed and the sample is true.
Is it okay if my water sample sits before being tested?Fresh is best. Chlorine fades fast, especially in heat. Keep the sample out of the sun and out of a hot car.
How quickly should I bring my water sample to the store?Same day, ideally within an hour or two.
How often should I test my pool water? At home, test chlorine and pH two to three times a week in summer. Bring a sample to us every one to two weeks during swim season, and at least once a month in winter.
How long does an in-store water test take?About 2 minutes.
Do you charge for water testing? No. Water testing is free.
Can you test saltwater pools?Yes. Tell us it is a salt pool so we check the salt level too.
Can you test spa or hot-tub water?Yes. Bring a sample and tell us if you use chlorine or bromine.
Should I bring a water sample before adding chemicals?Yes. Bring it before you add anything so we see the true starting point.
How long after adding chemicals should I wait before testing again?Wait 4 to 6 hours with the pump running for basic adjustments. Wait 24 hours after big changes like alkalinity, calcium, stabilizer, or shock.
Why are my home test-strip results different from the store water test?Strips are a quick guide, but the colors are hard to read and strips go bad with heat and moisture. Our test is more exact.
Do I need to bring another sample after following the treatment instructions?Yes for green water, cloudy water, or any big fix. Bring one 24 to 48 hours after treating. Otherwise, bring one at your next regular visit.
Questions? Call (661) 664-9000 or stop by Top Dog Pool Supply.

Cloudy, Green & Problem Water

Why is my pool cloudy?Usually filtration or chemistry. Common causes: pump not running long enough, a dirty filter, low chlorine, or pH and alkalinity out of range. Bring a sample and we will pinpoint it.
What chemicals can I use for a cloudy pool?First fix the balance and chlorine. Then a clarifier or flocculant can help the filter catch tiny particles. We will tell you which one fits your pool.
What causes a green pool?Algae. It grows when chlorine is low, the water is warm, and circulation is weak.
Why is my pool still green after adding chlorine?Usually not enough chlorine for the amount of algae, stabilizer too high, pH too high, or a dirty filter. Brush, shock heavily, run the pump nonstop, and bring us a sample.
How do I clear up a green pool?1. Bring us a sample. 2. Clean the filter. 3. Brush the whole pool. 4. Balance the pH. 5. Shock heavily. 6. Run the pump 24 hours. 7. Clean the filter again and retest.
Why does my pool keep turning green?Something is feeding the algae: low chlorine, high stabilizer, short pump time, a dirty filter, or not enough brushing. A water test shows which one.
Why is my pool cloudy even though my chlorine level is good?Chlorine is not the whole story. Check the filter, pump hours, pH, alkalinity, and calcium. Tiny dead algae and fine dust also cloud the water.
What causes algae to grow?Sun, warm water, low chlorine, weak circulation, and food like phosphates and debris. It arrives on wind, rain, swimsuits, and toys.
What is mustard/yellow algae?A yellow-brown, dusty algae that likes shady walls. Chlorine alone struggles with it. Brush it, shock the pool, treat it, and clean swimsuits and toys so it does not come back.
What is black algae?Dark spots that root into plaster. Scrub them (stainless steel brush on plaster only), treat the spots directly, and shock the pool. It often takes repeat treatments.
Why are the walls or steps slippery?Algae film is starting. Brush and raise chlorine before it turns green.
Why does my pool have stains?Usually metals (iron, copper) or organics (leaves, berries). A vitamin C tablet rubbed on the stain lightens metal stains. Bring us a photo and we will help.
Why is there a white scale around my tile or equipment?Calcium scale. It comes from high calcium, high pH, or high alkalinity, and heat and evaporation make it worse. We can test and recommend a fix.
Why does my pool water smell strongly like chlorine? That smell is used-up chlorine (chloramines), not too much chlorine. The fix is to shock the pool.
Why are swimmers' eyes burning?Same cause: used-up chlorine, or pH out of range. Test it, shock if needed, and bring pH to 7.2 to 7.6.
Why is my pool foaming?Sunscreen, lotions, too much algaecide, or high dissolved solids. A defoamer clears it fast. If it keeps coming back, bring a sample.
Questions? Call (661) 664-9000 or stop by Top Dog Pool Supply.

Pool Chemistry

How do I adjust pH?Ideal is 7.2 to 7.6. To raise it, use soda ash. To lower it, use muriatic acid or dry acid. Add small amounts with the pump on and retest in 4 to 6 hours.
How do I adjust total alkalinity?Ideal is 80 to 120 ppm. Raise it with baking soda. Lower it with acid. Make small changes and retest.
What is the difference between pH and alkalinity?pH tells you how acidic the water is right now. Alkalinity is the cushion that keeps pH from swinging.
What should my chlorine level be?1 to 3 ppm free chlorine is the usual target. We adjust it to match your stabilizer level.
What is stabilizer/conditioner?Also called cyanuric acid. It works like sunscreen for your chlorine.
Why is my stabilizer level important? In Bakersfield sun, chlorine burns off fast without it. Aim for 30 to 50 ppm (60 to 80 ppm for salt pools).
What happens if my stabilizer is too high?Chlorine gets weak and slow, even when the test looks fine. Over 100 ppm usually means draining part of the pool and refilling.
What is calcium hardness?Minerals in the water. Plaster pools want 200 to 400 ppm. Vinyl and fiberglass want 150 to 250. Too low eats plaster. Too high makes scale.
What order should I add pool chemicals in?Test first. Then alkalinity, pH, calcium, and stabilizer as needed. Chlorine or shock goes last.
Can I add different pool chemicals at the same time? No. Add one at a time and never mix chemicals together.
How long should I wait between adding chemicals?About 30 minutes to an hour, with the pump running.
Should my pump be running when I add chemicals?Yes. Always.
How long after adding chemicals can I swim? After pH or alkalinity changes, about an hour. After shock, wait until chlorine is back under 5 ppm, usually overnight. Always read the label and test first.
Where should I pour chemicals into the pool?Pump on. Pour acid slowly into the deep end, away from walls and the skimmer. Add acid to water, never water to acid. Pour liquid chlorine around the edge. On vinyl and fiberglass pools, dissolve shock in a bucket of water first.
Can I put chlorine directly into my skimmer? No. Do not pour liquid chlorine, shock, or granular chemicals into the skimmer. It can damage your pump and filter. Use a floater or feeder for tablets.
Why am I using so much chlorine?Common causes: algae, low stabilizer, heat, heavy swimmers, or dirt. A water test finds the reason.
Why can't I keep chlorine in my pool?Something is using it up: algae, sun, or contaminants. Bring a sample so we can check stabilizer and chlorine demand.
What does "shock the pool" actually mean?Raising chlorine very high on purpose to burn off used-up chlorine, algae, and gunk.
How often should I shock my pool?Every 1 to 2 weeks in summer, plus after storms, parties, or algae. Less often in winter.
What's the difference between liquid chlorine, tablets, and shock?Liquid chlorine is fast and clean. Tablets are slow and steady, but they add stabilizer. Shock is a strong boost used now and then.
Can I use household bleach in my pool?Plain, unscented bleach works in a pinch. It is weaker than pool liquid chlorine, so you use more and pay more per dose.
How does hot weather affect pool chemistry?Chlorine burns off faster, algae grows faster, and water evaporates and gets mineral-heavy. Test twice a week and run the pump longer.
Questions? Call (661) 664-9000 or stop by Top Dog Pool Supply.

Draining & Refilling

How often should my pool be drained? Not on a schedule. Only when a test says so. Many pools go five years or more.
How do I know when my pool actually needs to be drained?Stabilizer over 100 ppm, high dissolved solids or calcium, or water you cannot balance. A test tells us.
When is the best time of year to drain my pool?Spring or fall. Never in summer heat.
How long can I safely leave my pool empty? As short as possible. A few days at most. Sun and heat can crack plaster.
Can draining a pool damage it?Yes. Plaster can crack, vinyl liners can shrink, and the pool can shift. Call us first.
Can a pool pop out of the ground if it is drained?Yes, if groundwater is high. An empty in-ground pool can lift. Check before you drain.
Should I drain the whole pool or only part of it?Usually part. Draining a quarter to half and refilling often fixes high stabilizer or minerals. A test tells us how much.
How soon after refilling should I bring in a water sample?Once the pool is full and the pump has run about 24 hours.
What chemicals are needed for a pool startup? We build the list from a test of your fill water. Usually a stain and metal preventer first, then balance, stabilizer, and chlorine.
What should I do first after refilling my pool?Turn the pump on, add a metal preventer, brush the pool, and bring us a sample.
How long should I run the pump after refilling?Nonstop for 24 to 48 hours, then back to your normal schedule.
Can I swim immediately after a refill? Not yet. Wait until the water is balanced and chlorine is in range, usually a day or two.
Why is fresh fill water sometimes difficult to balance?New water has no cushion yet, and tap water here is often hard or high in minerals. It takes a few adjustments to settle.
Questions? Call (661) 664-9000 or stop by Top Dog Pool Supply.

Pumps, Filters & Circulation

How long should I run my pool pump every day?Summer: 8 to 12 hours. Winter: 6 to 8 hours. Enough to cycle all the water at least once a day.
Should I run my pump during the day or at night?Mostly daytime, when the sun burns chlorine. If you have time-of-use electric rates, move some hours away from peak.
Should I run my pump longer during the summer?Yes.
How do I know if my filter needs cleaning?Pressure is 8 to 10 psi above its clean reading, flow is weak, or the water is cloudy.
How do I know if my filter cartridges are bad?Torn or flattened pleats, brittle or cracked ends, or they never get clean.
How often should cartridge filters be replaced?About every 2 to 3 years. Sooner with heavy use.
How often should I backwash my filter? When pressure rises 8 to 10 psi above clean, usually every 4 to 6 weeks.
What should my filter pressure normally be?It varies by pool. Note the reading right after cleaning. That is your normal. Clean when it climbs 8 to 10 psi.
Why is my filter pressure high?A dirty filter, a closed valve, or a clogged return or cleaner line.
Why is my filter pressure low?Clogged baskets or impeller, low water level, an air leak, or a closed valve before the pump.
Why do I have weak flow coming from my pool returns?Check the baskets, filter, and valves first. Then the impeller.
Why is my pump losing prime?Usually air getting in: low water, a loose lid o-ring, loose fittings, or a worn shaft seal.
Why are there bubbles coming from my return jets?Air is leaking in on the suction side. Check the pump lid o-ring, the unions, and the skimmer water level.
Why isn't my pump pulling water?Check the water level, baskets, valves, and prime. If the motor hums but nothing moves, call us.
Why is my pump making noise?Screaming or grinding is bearings. Rattling is debris. Gurgling is air.
Why is water leaking around my pump?Usually the shaft seal, lid o-ring, or a loose fitting. Fix it soon. Water ruins the motor.
How often should I clean my pump basket?Weekly. More often in leaf season.
How often should I clean my skimmer basket?Weekly. More often in leaf season, and after wind or storms.
Do I need to run the pump after adding chemicals?Yes. At least 4 to 6 hours, ideally overnight after shock.
Questions? Call (661) 664-9000 or stop by Top Dog Pool Supply.

Salt Pools

Is a saltwater pool chlorine-free?No. A salt system makes its own chlorine from salt. It just feels softer on the skin.
How much salt should be in my pool?Usually 3,000 to 3,500 ppm. Check your cell's manual. We can confirm with a test.
How often do I add salt?Only when the level drops, from splash-out, rain, or draining. Test monthly.
Why isn't my salt system producing chlorine?Low salt, cold water, a dirty cell, low flow, high stabilizer, or a worn cell.
How do I know if my salt cell needs cleaning?White flakes on the plates, an inspect-cell light, or lower chlorine output.
How often should a salt cell be cleaned?Look inside every 3 months. Clean it when you see scale. Hard water means more often.
How long does a salt cell normally last?Typically 3 to 7 years.
Can too much salt damage my pool?Yes. It can corrode metals and trip the cell. A partial drain fixes it.
Why does my salt system say "low salt" when my salt level is correct?Often a scaled cell, cold water, or a worn cell. Bring a sample so we can check your real salt level.
Do saltwater pools still need shock?Yes, now and then. Use your system's boost mode or add shock.
Do saltwater pools still need stabilizer?Yes. Aim for 60 to 80 ppm.

Chlorine Tablets & Feeders

How many chlorine tablets should I use?A common start is one 3-inch tablet per 5,000 gallons per week. Adjust based on your tests.
How often should I add tablets?Check the feeder weekly. Refill when it runs low.
Should I put chlorine tablets in my skimmer? No. When the pump stops, strong acidic water sits in your pump and plumbing and can damage them.
Can I put tablets directly in the pool? No. They can bleach or stain the surface.
Why aren't the tablets dissolving?Low flow through the feeder, the feeder set too low, or cold water.
Why are my tablets dissolving too quickly? The feeder is set too high, the water is hot, or there are too many tablets.
What's the difference between a floater and an automatic chlorine feeder?A floater drifts around and costs less. An automatic feeder is built into the plumbing and gives steady, adjustable dosing.
Can chlorine tablets raise my stabilizer level?Yes. Every tablet adds some. Test stabilizer every month or two.
Should I use tablets year-round?Use less in winter. Many pools mix tablets with liquid chlorine to keep stabilizer in check.

Cleaning & Maintenance

How often should I brush my pool?Weekly. More in hot weather.
How often should I vacuum my pool?Weekly, or whenever you see debris.
Do I still need to brush if I have a pool cleaner?Yes. Cleaners miss steps, corners, and walls.
Why does dirt keep coming back after I vacuum?Fine dust slips through the filter. Clean the filter, run the pump longer, and a clarifier can help. Bakersfield wind adds a lot of dust.
How often should I clean my tile?Monthly, or when scum builds at the waterline.
How often should I clean my filter?Check pressure weekly and clean when it rises 8 to 10 psi above normal. See the Pumps, Filters & Circulation section.
Why does debris keep settling on the bottom?Weak circulation, or the pump is not running long enough.
Should I brush before or after adding chemicals? Before, so the chemicals mix in. Brush again after shock or algaecide.
What type of pool brush should I use?Nylon for most pools, especially vinyl, fiberglass, and pebble. Stainless steel only for bare plaster.
Can I use a wire brush on my pool surface?Only on bare plaster, mainly for black algae. Never on vinyl, fiberglass, paint, or pebble.
Questions? Call (661) 664-9000 or stop by Top Dog Pool Supply.

Seasonal Questions

Do I need to maintain my pool during the winter?Yes. Less often, but algae still grows. Keep the water circulating and test it.
Should I run my pump less during the winter?Yes. 6 to 8 hours. Run it overnight when freezing is forecast.
Do I need chlorine during the winter?Yes, just less. Keep it in range.
When should I start preparing my pool for summer?March or April. Clean the filter, check equipment, and test and balance before the first heat wave.
Why does my pool use more chlorine during hot weather?Heat and sun burn it off, and algae grows faster.
Should I cover my pool in the winter?Optional. A cover keeps out leaves and slows evaporation.
What should I do with my pool before leaving on vacation?Balance the water, shock, clean the filter, fill the feeder, and set the pump timer. Gone more than two weeks? Arrange someone to check in.
How do I keep my pool from turning green while I'm away?Do the same steps, plus a long-lasting algaecide. Keep the pump running.
Questions? Call (661) 664-9000 or stop by Top Dog Pool Supply.

Equipment & Repairs

How do I know if my pool pump needs to be replaced?Loud bearings, leaks, tripping the breaker, weak flow after cleaning, or it is 8 to 10 years old.
How long should a pool pump last?About 8 to 10 years.
How long should a pool filter last?Cartridges: 2 to 3 years. The tank: 10 years or more.
How long should a pool heater last?About 8 to 10 years. Longer with balanced water.
Why isn't my pool heater heating?Check the thermostat setting, water flow, and filter first. Then gas, ignition, or a safety switch.
Why is my heater going into lockout? It is a safety shutoff. Usually low flow or a dirty filter. If it keeps happening, call us.
Why is my pool losing water?About 1/4 inch a day is normal evaporation in summer. More than that may be a leak.
How can I tell whether I have a pool leak?Bucket test: set a bucket of water on the first step, mark the water level inside and outside the bucket, and compare after 24 hours. If the pool dropped more than the bucket, you may have a leak.
Why is my automatic pool cleaner not moving?A full bag or basket, a clogged hose, low suction, or worn parts.
Do you diagnose pool equipment problems?Yes.
Do you repair pumps, filters, heaters, and automation systems?Yes. We are an authorized service center for major brands.
Do you install replacement pool equipment?Yes.
Should I repair my old pump or replace it?If the repair costs more than about half the price of a new one, or the pump is 10 years old, replace it. We will give you an honest recommendation.
What information should I bring in when looking for a replacement part?Photos of the equipment, the model and part numbers, and pictures of the broken piece.
